But following uproar from campaigners and animal-lovers alike, their environmental secretary has been forced to concede \u201canimals are sentient and feel pain\u201d\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>In a written House of Commons statement, Michael Gove promised to make \u201cany necessary changes\u201d to ensure Brexit would not weaken rules around treating animals as sentient beings. Addressing animal welfare concerns, he confirmed that the Government would now look for \u201ca rigorous and comprehensive way to ensure animal sentience is recognised\u201d under British law:<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWe are acting energetically to reduce the risk of harm to animals, whether on farms or in the wild\u201d. Humane Society International\u2019s Claire Bass welcomed the announcement, saying \u201cacknowledging that animals have the capacity to suffer and feel pain is absolutely fundamental to protecting them\u201d.
