{"id":749655,"date":"2017-12-15T20:16:45","date_gmt":"2017-12-15T20:16:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arkcenter.us\/?p=749655"},"modified":"2017-12-15T20:16:45","modified_gmt":"2017-12-15T20:16:45","slug":"elephants-deserve-legal-personhood-new-lawsuit-argues-in-connecticut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/animalrightswatch.us\/?p=749655","title":{"rendered":"Elephants Deserve Legal \u2018Personhood,\u2019 New Lawsuit Argues in Connecticut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>DANIELLA SILVA:<\/strong> <em>\u2018In the first case of its kind in the United States, an animal rights group has filed suit seeking legal personhood for elephants who are being kept at a Connecticut zoo. \u201cThe Nonhuman Rights Project\u2019s lawsuit on behalf of the elephants \u2014 Minnie, Beulah, and Karen \u2014 marks the first time in the world that a lawsuit has demanded that an elephant\u2019s legal right not to be imprisoned and treated as a thing be recognized,\u201d said Steven Wise, founder of the Nonhuman Rights Project (NhRP), which filed the suit.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Wise is arguing that animals such as elephants, which have complex cognitive and social abilities, should not be counted as \u201cthings\u201d under the law, meaning they \u201clack the capacity for any kind of legal rights,\u201d he said. Instead, the group is pushing for the courts to give the elephants the capacity for \u201cpersonhood\u201d\u2026 <\/em><em>The group is working to have the three elephants removed from the R.W.
