{"id":750563,"date":"2017-12-29T13:50:24","date_gmt":"2017-12-29T13:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arkcenter.us\/?p=750563"},"modified":"2017-12-29T13:54:10","modified_gmt":"2017-12-29T13:54:10","slug":"judge-denies-petition-to-free-elephants-from-connecticut-zoo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/animalrightswatch.us\/?p=750563","title":{"rendered":"Judge denies petition to free elephants from Connecticut zoo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>BEN LAMBERT:<\/strong> <em>&#8216;A Connecticut judge&#8230; denied a petition&#8230; for a writ of habeas&#8230; seeking to free three elephants from the Commerford Zoo, rejecting the argument that the animals should be granted legal personhood,&#8230; stating that \u201cthe court lacks subject matter jurisdiction and the petition is wholly frivolous on its face in legal terms&#8221;&#8230; The decision was based on two conclusions&#8230; one, that the group did not have a prior relationship with the three elephants, and thus did not have standing to bring the petition; and two, that there was no precedent for providing elephants the rights of legal personhood.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Nonhuman Rights Project filed the lawsuit in November, with the hopes of garnering a writ of habeas corpus for three elephants from the Goshen zoo \u2014 Beulah, Karen and Minnie.
