You\u2019ll have heart failure, but we\u2019ll get rich.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>LYNN BREZOSKY:<\/strong> <em>&#8216;The Texas Beef Council trumpets its message in colorful brochures designed for doctor\u2019s offices across Texas and internet searches around the nation: Have high cholesterol? Eat lean beef. Or \u201ccarne de res magra,\u201d as the brochures say in Spanish. That\u2019s not only bad advice, but against the law, says a group of doctors that has filed a complaint alleging that the state-designated, industry-funded council violates the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices-Consumer Protection Act by promoting beef industry-funded research at the expense of patient health.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cThe Texas Beef Council is using fake science to convince people to do something that will harm them so that the beef producers in Texas make more money,\u201d said Dr. John Pippin, a Dallas cardiologist with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a national nonprofit that this week took the issue to the Texas attorney general\u2019s office&#8230; Pippin said that \u201cwhat the Texas Beef Council is saying to the citizens of Texas is support your beef industry, eat beef. You\u2019ll die younger, you\u2019ll have heart attacks, you\u2019ll have a stroke. You\u2019ll have heart failure, but we\u2019ll get rich&#8221;&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>When the program makes false claims, the doctors argue, it is both leading patients to eat foods that can worsen their condition and breaking state law. Red meat, Pippin said, is harmful, with the risk for heart and other diseases correlating with consumption levels of red and processed meats. \u201cI don\u2019t care how lean you want to make it, I don\u2019t care if you trim all the fat and you breed the marbling out of it or what you do, it\u2019s the saturated fat, the cholesterol, the heme iron \u2014 which affects oxidation in the blood \u2014 it\u2019s all these things in dead cows that will kill you, and I\u2019ve seen it in 20-plus years with my practice,\u201d Pippin said&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Meat consumption in general is on the rise. The USDA reports that Americans are on track to consume a record 222.2 pounds of red meat and poultry in 2018, with egg and dairy consumption rising as well. The increase is attributed to a variety of factors, among them the belief that protein is good and carbohydrates are bad for health and weight control. Heart disease is the state\u2019s leading cause of death, killing more than 43,000 Texans each year.
