Universities have sown some of the seeds of the current wave of plant-based and lab-grown meat companies, including Beyond Meat and Mosa Meat, but more often the innovation has come from private-sector startups.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Startups will be eligible to apply for the grants as well as universities, but GFI\u2019s grant program is more of an open-source model, with the goal of creating new technologies and ingredients that can be used by all, Rees Clayton said. \u201cWe\u2019re not asking for ownership or anything.
