{"id":754875,"date":"2018-10-04T09:25:19","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T13:25:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/arkcenter.us\/?p=754875"},"modified":"2018-10-04T09:35:09","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T13:35:09","slug":"754875","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/animalrightswatch.us\/?p=754875","title":{"rendered":"Animal rights group claims Bronx elephant is a person"},"content":{"rendered":"\t<blockquote  class=\"bs-quote bs-quote-1 bsq-t1 bsq-s1 bsq-left\">\n\t\t<div class=\"quote-content\">\n\t\t\t<p>It doesn\u2019t matter how you imprison them, any normal elephant wouldn\u2019t want to live in the Bronx Zoo, said the Nonhuman Rights Project\u2019s founder and president, Steven Wise.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>PRISCILLA DeGREGORY:<\/strong> <em>&#8216;The animal rights group that famously tried \u2014 and failed \u2014 to get a pair New York primates the same legal right to freedom as humans has a new client: Bronx Zoo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonhumanrights.org\/client-happy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Happy<\/a> the elephant.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The Nonhuman Rights Project announced Tuesday it is filing a suit against the zoo on behalf of the pachyderm, demanding the recognition of her \u201clegal personhood and fundamental right to bodily liberty\u201d as well as her transfer to an elephant sanctuary.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The group argues the elephant \u2014 best known as the first elephant to demonstrate self recognition in a mirror \u2014 is anything but \u201cHappy\u201d because she\u2019s been isolated in captivity at the Zoo for 12 years, while the highly intelligent mammals are born to live in packs and roam free&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Happy, a 47-year-old Asian elephant captured in Thailand as an infant, first lost her longtime companion, Grumpy, when he was fatally injured by two other elephants in 2002.
