In addition to being a great artist, architect, botanist, engineer, mathematician, cartographer, geologist, and musician, this Renaissance man was also an animal advocate&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>There are accounts of da Vinci \u2014 who preferred to dress in linen so as not to wear \u201csomething dead\u201d\u2014buying caged birds only to release them, restoring their \u201clost liberty.\u201d He spoke out for lobsters: \u201cHow cruel for one whose natural habitat is water to be made to die in boiling water.\u201d He lamented chicks who \u201cwill never come to birth\u201d because humans steal hens\u2019 eggs, and was clear about not eating meat&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>That\u2019s why PETA is marking the 500th anniversary of his death\u2014which occurred on May 2, 1519\u2014with a celebration honoring his memory as an animal rights pioneer&#8230; PETA has kicked off an international memorial campaign with a public unveiling of our new \u201cLeonardo da Veggie \u2014 Eat Like a Genius\u201d ad in Milan, Italy, a city where da Vinci spent much of his life and where many of his best-known creations can still be seen today&#8217;.<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/headlines.peta.org\/leonardo-da-vinci-animal-rights-pioneer-2019-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>SOURCE&#8230;<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PETA: &#8216;Is there anything that Leonardo da Vinci didn\u2019t anticipate?
