{"id":759737,"date":"2020-02-27T08:42:20","date_gmt":"2020-02-27T13:42:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/animalrightswatch.us\/?p=759737"},"modified":"2020-02-27T09:14:25","modified_gmt":"2020-02-27T14:14:25","slug":"the-debate-on-what-to-do-about-floridas-monkeys-after-infecting-them-with-herpes-virus-in-lab-experiments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/animalrightswatch.us\/?p=759737","title":{"rendered":"The debate on what to do about Florida\u2019s monkeys infected with herpes in animal testing labs"},"content":{"rendered":"\t<blockquote  class=\"bs-quote bs-quote-1 bsq-t1 bsq-s1 bsq-left\">\n\t\t<div class=\"quote-content\">\n\t\t\t<p>Since 1984, and for the next several decades, about 1000 of macaque monkeys have been infected with the herpes virus for biomedical research, and later released along Florida\u2019s Silver River.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>HANNAH KNOWLES:<\/strong> <em>&#8216;The debate about whether and how to control the 4,000-acre park\u2019s rhesus macaques has reignited in recent weeks after a spate of far-flung monkey sightings brought alarm and blaring headlines: \u201cThey\u2019re here!\u201d one news station declared after the animals showed up as far as 100 miles north in Jacksonville&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The macaque population along Florida\u2019s Silver River had ballooned to nearly 400 by 1984, according to a paper by Anderson and her colleagues. About a thousand of the area\u2019s monkeys were trapped and sold for biomedical research over the next several decades, they write, as people grew concerned they might be plundering birds\u2019 nests and could pass their virus on to humans. The macaques\u2019 herpes B has only been transmitted to people in the lab \u2014 but in the rare cases that humans get the virus, it can be deadly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>The trapping and selling drew its own backlash, however, from animal rights groups and others concerned for the monkeys\u2019 welfare&#8230;\u201cIt is a tragedy that wild monkeys are torn from their families and forest homes and sold to research and testing laboratories,\u201d one animal rights organization\u2019s spokesman said in 2013, calling on officials to catch and sterilize instead, as the Ocala Star-Banner reported&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cWhat do you do with the monkeys?\u201d the University of Florida associate professor told The Washington Post. \u201cIf you bring them out alive, something has to be done with them&#8221;&#8230; But sterilization is expensive, researchers say, and budgets are tight. Steven Johnson, an academic who advocates cutting the monkey population, acknowledges there is no easy solution now that the macaques have made themselves at home&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>And so, since 2012, efforts to thin Silver River\u2019s monkeys have stopped. Instead of trying to manage the population, officials warn tourists to keep their distance. \u201cWe tell people not to approach them, not to feed them, because we want people to stay safe,\u201d said Craig Littauer, a park services specialist.
