The 2019 edition of the stylebook currently requires the use of \u201cit\u201d for any animal who hasn\u2019t been given a name or had their sex identified by humans. For instance, it now offers \u201cThe cat, which was scared, ran to its basket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">PETA \u2014 an organization that opposes speciesism, the damaging belief that all other animal species are inferior to humans\u2014suggests using the pronouns \u201che,\u201d \u201cshe,\u201d or \u201cthey\u201d for all animals, with \u201cthey\u201d as an appropriate choice for an animal of unknown gender.
