NATIONAL NEWS DESK:<\/strong> A horse pulling a carriage in New York City’s Central Park collapsed and died on Tuesday, prompting renewed criticism from animal welfare advocates who have long called for an end to the city’s horse-drawn carriage industry…<\/em><\/p>\n

Witnesses and activists shared images and videos of the incident on social media, expressing concern about the conditions faced by carriage horses… Edita Birnkrant, who is the executive director of NYCLASS, reported that onlookers saw the horse “thrashing on the ground” with its tongue hanging out of its mouth…<\/em><\/p>\n

“He lay on Ninth Avenue for over an hour — with no veterinary care — while his driver slapped him, whipped him, and screamed at him to get up,” PETA said on its website. “PETA exposed this horror on social media within minutes. Ryder eventually died but not before a veterinarian\u2019s exam revealed that he was malnourished, sick, and elderly”…<\/em><\/p>\n

Animal rights organizations pointed to the animal’s death as evidence that horses should no longer be used to pull carriages through busy Manhattan streets and parks…<\/em><\/p>\n

The horse’s death comes as animal advocated gathered for a protest outside City Hall in support of Ryder’s Law to phase out the city’s horse carriages. According to The Post, the bill is scheduled to be reintroduced to the City Council on Thursday.<\/em><\/p>\n

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, said the legislation was named after an “emaciated” carriage horse named Ryder, who collapsed while working 2022 and later died. <\/em>SOURCE<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
