Retired British greyhounds are being ‘shipped to China and boiled alive for meat’

ASHITHA NAGESH: ‘Greyhounds are being ‘raced to death’ and then sold to Chinese buyers for meat, a charity has claimed. Rescuers at Candy Cane Rescue, a charity set up to help greyhounds in China, claim the dogs are shipped overseas for a hefty profit once they’re no longer fit enough for the track. Once there, they are either forced to continue racing, bred in horrific conditions, or put into wildlife parks where they are fed alive to big cats. When they cease being profitable they are sold to meat buyers, who reportedly boil and skin them alive.

Candy Cane was set up this year by Kerry Elliman, 39, who also founded Birmingham Greyhound Protection. It tries to rescue greyhounds from the meat trade in China and, where possible, repatriate them to loving homes in the UK… “Greyhounds are also sent to Shanghai Wildlife Park where, locals report, they are fed alive to big cats and other predators and forced to race against cheetahs for entertainment. When they have outlived their usefulness, many end up in the meat trade to be beaten, hung, boiled or skinned alive,”… the charity said… Kerry has now launched a campaign to make the sale of dogs to China illegal under British law’.
