The Good Food Institute grant program is more of an open-source model, with the goal of creating new technologies and ingredients that can be used by all.
JANET FORGRIEVE: ‘The non-profit Good Food Institute announced a $3 million competitive grant program for universities and startups working on plant-based and cell-based meat research. “GFI is focused on advancing the science and technology of plant-based and clean meats, and there’s a lot of research that still needs to be done,” said Erin Rees Clayton, GFI’s Scientific Foundations Liaison.
There aren’t many schools with established curricula in these specific areas and GFI estimates that only about 0.3% of universities worldwide are doing research in the fields of plant-based and lab-grown meat. Universities have sown some of the seeds of the current wave of plant-based and lab-grown meat companies, including Beyond Meat and Mosa Meat, but more often the innovation has come from private-sector startups.
Startups will be eligible to apply for the grants as well as universities, but GFI’s grant program is more of an open-source model, with the goal of creating new technologies and ingredients that can be used by all, Rees Clayton said. “We’re not asking for ownership or anything. We want to support research that is going to help the entire clean meat and plant-based industries, and we want to make it publicly available”.’ SOURCE…
