LATIFA YEDROUDJ: ‘Boxing Day’s annual hunt has triggered a wave of violent clashes between hunting fans and anti-hunting protestors across the UK, as thousands gather for the occasion. Fighting broke out outside the Tredegar Arms in Basseleg, near Newport in Wales, where a man and woman were almost run over by horses trotting through the streets. Angry scuffles also broke out in Sussex, as the Southdown and Eridge Foxhounds paraded through Lewes on Boxing Day morning.
Hunt supporters attempted to grab anti-hunting protestors’ banners, triggering fury amongst opposing groups that police had to step in to control the crowd. Ahead of the hunts, shadow environment secretary Sue Hayman said an incoming Labour government would review penalties under the Hunting Act 2004 to ensure it is an effective deterrent. Ms Hayman said there will be measures to prevent “loopholes” in the legislation.
