Forgotten victims of Amazon fires as animals die ‘horrific’ deaths

MILLIONS of animals died horrific deaths as they were overcome by fumes. Even those that escape the flames often suffer painful internal injuries which can claim their lives days later.

DAVE BURKE: ‘With a look of terror in her eyes, a charred cat is carried to safety as fire engulfs its home in the Amazon. The animal is one of the lucky ones, having survived deadly fires which devastated large sections of the world’s biggest rainforest. Tragically thousands of others were not so fortunate, dying horrific deaths as they were overcome by fumes. Even those that escape the flames often suffer painful internal injuries which can claim their lives days later.

Heartbreaking images show a snake lying dead in the aftermath of a blaze, and vets responding to the Amazon’s worst fires on record have been confronted by hugely distressing sights. Animal rights groups claims these creatures are the “forgotten” victims of the fires which shocked the world. Dr Juan Carlos Murillo, who has been heading up an emergency response operation for World Animal Protection in recent weeks, told Mirror Online that the situation on the ground is dire.

“The problem here isn’t just directly with the fires, it’s the suffering of the animals,” he said. “When they inhale they are burning inside, but you sometimes don’t see the effects until four or five days later. “It’s affecting their kidneys and their internal organs, sometimes they did of septicemia days later. “They’re dying horrible deaths. I’ve seen some horrible images, we’ve faced situations where animals have burned alive, and others have died because of internal issues.”

Dr Murillo said: “Birds are suffering the most because they can be flying when they’re trapped in a heatwave. They get burned inside, people are telling us that birds suddenly drop down to the ground and die.” The Amazon is home to around 30% of the world’s animal species, and tens of thousands of mammals, birds, insects and reptiles are believed to have perished’.  SOURCE…
