‘Horrendous and grotesque’ Bali slammed as worst destination for animal cruelty

Elephant rides, swimming with dolphins, orangutan selfies and circus-style shows, have become increasingly popular tourist activities for many travellers.

JOE GAMP: ‘A new global World Animal Protection (WAP) report… has slammed the Indonesian islands of Bali, Lombok and Gili Trawangan, claiming the region is responsible for the most “horrendous” cruelty towards captive animals in the world. The shocking new report, titled ‘Wildlife entertainment tourism in Bali, Lombok and Gili Trawangan’ and comprised of information gained from undercover investigations, stated that 100 percent of the 26 venues it investigated in November 2017 that owned captive elephants, tigers, dolphins or civet cats did not meet the basic needs of wild animals in captivity.

WAP say the report is intended to raise awareness of circus style shows that tourists witness when on holiday in the “idyllic paradise”. Steve McIvor, CEO of the WAP, said: “Elephant rides, swimming with dolphins, orangutan selfies and circus-style shows, have become increasingly popular tourist activities for many travellers”… “It’s a tragedy that Bali, such a beautiful destination for tourists, forces its captive wild animals to endure such grotesque and horrific conditions”.’ SOURCE…
