May they rot in hell: Dog with legs amputated by evil scum becomes Turkish election issue

STUART WINTER: ‘Sickening images of a maimed puppy with its four paws and tail chopped off have become a major political issue in Turkey’s presidential election. National outrage over the heartbreaking pictures of the tragic puppy wrapped in bandages shortly before SHE died are dominating the debate with calls for tougher action on animal cruelty. President Tayyip Erdogan is pledging to toughen Turkey’s animal welfare laws if he wins a second term at this Sunday’s polls. And his main opponent Meral Aksener has called for the perpetrator to rot in Hell.

As Turkish police arrested a digger machine operator suspected of injuring the jet black dog, President Erdogan was telling supporters cruelty laws would be amended. “Whether at home or on the street, we will take the law into consideration and evaluate it,” he told an election rally in Istanbul. “There is nothing acceptable about this, but it is very important to show this awareness.” He had earlier Tweeted: “Protecting animals is not only a task, but also part of our belief, our humanity. Animals are not a commodity…”…

Animal rights group have been outraged since images of the puppy emerged in recent days, declaring that Turkey’s punishments for cruelty are too weak and that welfare legislation has been stalled on the political agenda for too long. Over the last three days, Turkish social media has been filled with images of the doleful-eyed dog looking forlorn, its torso wrapped in white bandages and pink plasters’. SOURCE…
