Yes, the Animal Cracker package redesign matters

Thanks to social media and increasing activist networks, the public has gained greater access to what was once kept behind closed curtains, and is now seeing what captive performing animals are truly forced to endure.

SCOTT REID: ‘To some it may seem pointless, ridiculous, a minor change that doesn’t actually change much. The iconic Barnum’s Animal Crackers have been symbolically set free, as Nabisco now removes the circus cages from their packaging, placing the long-time captive animals on an open savanna landscape.

In the grand scheme of animal activism, it may be a relatively small victory for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — which has been campaigning for the alteration since 2016 — but to deem the change insignificant would simply be naïve. Obviously we are not just talking about a mere packaging edit. Removing the image of cages is a symbolic reflection of a major change to a long-standing cultural norm. The public no longer wants to see wild animals kept captive by circuses, not in real life, not even in illustration…
