Rescue campaign for chimp Bili who suffered horrific injuries after being moved to German zoo

Bili was born in a zoo in England in 2008 but moved to Frankfurt Zoo. He was then moved to Wuppertal Zoo in November 2018 to become a breeding male .

KATE BUCK: ‘Heartbreaking pictures of Bili the Bonobo Chimpanzee have shown how other primates have bitten part of his ear off and left his feet and hands bloodied and bruised. The German zoo has even said that he could be euthanised if the situation does not improve, but have so far rejected an appeal to move him to a rescue centre in England.

Bili was born in a zoo in England in 2008 but moved to Frankfurt Zoo when he was rejected by his mother at just three-months-old. There, he was adopted by a group of females who had experience with dealing with unwanted youngsters. He was then moved to Wuppertal Zoo in November 2018 to become a breeding male after the females in Frankfurt refused to mate with him. But twin males Azibo and Ayubu have taken a disliking to Bili and attack him, and the rest of the group join in when Bili tries to defend himself…

The ‘Save Bonobo Bili from Wuppertal Zoo’ petition was launched after it was revealed that Bili had been attacked by other apes and has since gained more than 8,000 signatures. It was launched by animal lover Petra Bente who wants to see the ape sent to Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre near Bovington, in Dorset.

Bonobos, also known as dwarf chimpanzees, are an endangered species with less than 20,000 left in the wild. They are smaller, leaner and darker than standard chimpanzees and their social groups are usually led by females’. SOURCE…
