SARA MALM: The maltreated animals which Albanian authorities ordered to be rescued from a ‘zoo from hell’ are still languishing in their cramped concrete cages at the park, according to animal rights activists. Shocking pictures taken at the privately-owned Safari Park Zoo in Fier, southwest Albania, earlier this week, show a malnourished lion with a seemingly untreated severe eye-infection, and other animals, including a zebra, a thin-looking wolf and several deer, locked up in barren concrete cages. The photos sparked international outrage, and saw Albania’s Minister of Tourism and Environment, Blendi Klosi, swoop in and order the animals’ urgent rescue on Tuesday.
However, an animal rights organisation petitioning the Albanian government to free the animals has told MailOnline ‘they are still in the zoo and their condition is worsening every day’… Wednesday saw an announcement that the zoo had been temporarily blocked from operating by the government, but there was no work on the animal’s evacuation. Ioana Dungler, the Director of Four Paws’ Wild Animals Department, landed in Albania’s capital Tirana yesterday to meet officials and discuss the evacuation of the animals. ‘The animals are still suffering in the Safari Park Zoo in Fier, Albania and Four Paws is planning to rescue them within the next two weeks,’ Ms Dungler said…
