Harrowing pictures show police rescuing animals from ‘hellish’ Albanian zoo

In total, three lions, a waterbuck, four deer, a fox, a zebra and a turtle were sedated then taken for treatment at Tirana's public zoo.

BRITTANY VONOW: ‘Authorities forced their way into the zoo – labelled the “safari park from hell” – after the horrific conditions were exposed earlier this month. Photographs show a severely malnourished lion being rushed from the Safari Park Zoo in Albania, while a zebra is also wrapped in a blanket and rescued. In total, three lions, a waterbuck, four deer, a fox, a zebra and a turtle were sedated then taken for treatment at Tirana’s public zoo. Authorities acted after pictures were taken at the Safari Park Zoo in Fier, Albania, showing animals living in cramped concrete cages…

The images show what appeared to be ‘suffering’ lions languishing in desolate, dirty concrete cages surrounded by their own waste and without even the most basic provisions such as fresh water and shade. The photographer claimed vets who have visited the macabre facility described what they were greeted with as “some of the worst animal welfare conditions they have ever seen”.

Animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS has been active in Albania in recent years, primarily working alongside the Albanian Ministry of Environment and other NGOs in the area. Spokesperson Martin Bauer said the animals would be rehomed… Ioana Dungler, who heads up the charity’s Wild Animals Department, said: “The situation at the Safari Park Zoo in Fier is clearly absolutely unacceptable for the animals remaining there. The conditions do not even come close to being appropriate, particularly for large wild animals like lions and bears which have very specific environmental and dietary needs”.’ SOURCE…
