ZOE DREWETT: ‘People working in the meat industry are seeking protection from counter-terror police after threats of extreme protests by vegan activisits, according to a Dispatches investigation. The National Pig Association and the British Poultry Council are said to be among a number of organisations being advised by specialist police. Farms, abattoir and factory workers are fearful after incidents of vandalism and death threats across the country and a rising number of anti-meat protests are planned in the new year.
A survey in April found the number of vegans in Britain had soared to 3.5 million with the increase in popularity being put down to environmental factors as well as animal rights… In November it was announced that some British vegans were planning a ‘wave of protests’ across the country to target farms and butchers in a bid to sway people into going plant-based. The movement was said to be inspired by a 2013 documentary, The Earthlings Movement, aimed at persuading people to give up all animal products.
In November, vegan campaigners forced a farm in Bristol to cancel its annual charity turkey auction while another farmer in Exeter said he was sent death threats because he had invited shoppers to name their turkey before buying it for their Christmas dinner. Earlier this month a group of vegan protesters stormed the turkey aisle in Waitrose to protest against the Christmas dinner staple. Activists from the group Brighton Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) used a megaphone to shout ‘you can’t shop in peace when you are buying death’ at customers trying to do their food shop’. SOURCE…
