Animal rights activists given $330,000 fine for rescuing sick hens: ‘We don’t plan to paying a dime’

Paul and Jason don’t plan on paying a dime of this restitution. With the support of the community and an enthusiastic legal team, DxE will return to court to expose the real crime: torturing and murdering feeling beings.

GARTH STAPLEY: ”A judge ordered two animal-rights activists who trespassed at a Farmington egg farm in 2016 to pay $331,991 to compensate owners who ‘destroyed’ all 45,000 chickens in the barn the men entered. Paul Picklesimer and Jason Oliver will appeal a Dec. 19 ruling in San Joaquin Superior Court, according to a release from Direct Action Everywhere. The group, also known as DxE, has been making headlines for drawing attention to what members consider animal cruelty…

Picklesimer and Oliver appeared in a stealth video and removed two sick hens from egg supplier Pleasant Valley Farms in October 2016… The activists found “widespread cannibalism” among chickens and “horrific conditions,” DxE’s release said. The men initially were charged with felony commercial burglary and eventually pleaded to reduced misdemeanor trespassing charges in October 2017…

The hens, which lay about a dozen eggs every three weeks, were 69 weeks old, and normally are killed and replaced at about 82 weeks. Judge Michael Mulvihill agreed with veterinarians testifying at a series of restitution hearings, who estimated the loss at $332,000… DxE has justified entering animal production facilities without permission by saying members are rescuing animals from suspected cruelty’. In response, the following is an official statement from DxE’s Wayne Hsuing:

“My friends, Paul and Jason, just got charged a $330,000 restitution fee for investigating a Costco “Certified Humane” egg farm and rescuing two sick birds. The investigation was covered in the New York Times and the Washington Post. Millions of people saw what “cage-free” really means, and now the industry is seeking payback. The company killed thousands of birds and blamed Paul and Jason for their deaths, but we’re appealing the charge and continuing to expose the truth because of support from people like you.

Paul and Jason don’t plan on paying a dime of this restitution. It’s Costco that should be paying, instead of making millions by deceiving the public. With the support of the DxE community and an enthusiastic legal team, we will return to court to expose the real crime: torturing and murdering feeling beings”.
