‘It is shameful’: Animal rights activists face massive fines over protests

The Australian government is amending the Biosecurity Regulation 2016 to include the penalty for those considered to be a threat to biosecurity, and animal and worker welfare.

AUSTRALIAN AP: ‘Animal rights activists will risk on-the-spot fines if they trespass on Queensland farms and abattoirs to protest. It is amending the Biosecurity Regulation 2016 to include the penalty for those considered to be a threat to biosecurity, and animal and worker welfare… The decision comes after four woman and two men were charged with trespass and burglary offences stemming from alleged break-ins at several West Australian farms over a six-month period.

Police say the crimes happened between August 2018 and February this year at properties in Nambeelup, Hopeland, West Pinjarra, Benger and Mundijong. The activists, who range in age from 21 to 36, are linked to animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere and are scheduled to appear in Mandurah Magistrates Court on April 30. Nine people were also charged after chaining themselves to machinery at a NSW abattoir as part of last week’s nationwide protest’. SOURCE…
