Vegan activist goes hungry in prison with no animal-free food

JAMES WARDEN: The experience I had was nowhere near as bad as what animals are going through. They are suffering daily. I think it’s important for society to make change and start recognising animal ethics.

MILO BOYD: ‘A principled vegan activist accused of stealing a calf and dead piglet has gone on hunger strike over a prison’s animal-product-heavy menu. James Warden went hungry for 48 hours when he was locked up in Hakea Prison in Perth, Australia. The 25-year-old was remanded in custody after he was charged with two counts of trespassing and two counts each of stealing and aggravated burglary. The charges relate to the alleged theft of a $1,500 (£825) calf and a dead piglet from a West Australian farm which he is accused of live streaming on social media.

After the Direct Action Everywhere member was remanded in custody for not having enough money to cover bail, Warden refused to eat from the prison’s menu. Some of them just said ‘go and eat some meat’ and that kind of thing,” Warden told News.com.au of his fellow prisoners. “The experience I had was nowhere near as bad as what animals are going through. They are suffering daily, and I only had to put up with 48 hours in custody. “I think it’s important for society to make change and start recognising animal ethics.”

It is alleged that Warden and several others activists ranging in age from 21 to 36 took the baby cow to an animal rescue farm in Waroona… Once known for its meat based culture and love of barbecuing shrimp, Australia has taken an animal friendly turn in recent years. Roy Morgan research conducted in August 2016 found that between 2012 and 2016, the number of Australian adults whose diet was all or almost all vegetarian rose from 1.7 million people – or 9.7% of the population – to almost 2.1 million – or 11.2%.’  SOURCE…
