CAFT: Anti-fur protest campaign focused on Milan ‘Fashion Week’

For far too long, the runways of influential fashion weeks such as Milan have normalized the cruel fur industry, turning the suffering of millions of wild animals confined to tiny cages into trends driven by vanity and consumption…. Copenhagen, New York, and London Fashion Weeks have banned fur altogether, Milan risks falling behind by clinging to an outdated practice that the majority of the public no longer supports.

CAFT: Just one month after successfully urging New York Fashion Week to go fur-free, the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT) has launched an international protest campaign targeting Milan Fashion Week (MFW) and Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (CNMI), the governing body responsible for MFW’s official fashion calendar.

After multiple inquiries from CAFT regarding CNMI’s position on fur went unanswered, the organization initiated the campaign to call on CNMI to implement a runway fur ban consistent with those already adopted by New York and London Fashion Weeks. With the European Union currently considering a proposal to ban fur production, and potentially the import of fur products, it is clear that public sentiment has shifted decisively against an industry built on the confinement, suffering, and killing of animals for fashion.

Demonstrations are planned throughout Milan during the upcoming runway shows in February, with activists from across Europe expected to travel in… This new campaign continues CAFT’s long history of bold, decentralized pressure campaigns challenging some of the world’s most influential fashion houses, including Marc Jacobs, Max Mara, and Rick Owens…

CAFT Executive Director Suzie Stork explains why Milan Fashion Week is a priority:

“For far too long, the runways of influential fashion weeks such as Milan have normalized the cruel fur industry, turning the suffering of millions of wild animals confined to tiny cages into trends driven by vanity and consumption…. Copenhagen, New York, and London Fashion Weeks have banned fur altogether, Milan risks falling behind by clinging to an outdated practice that the majority of the public no longer supports.”
