Ed Winters: Billie Eilish, veganism, and the left’s moral ‘blind spot’

Like the rest of the political spectrum, the left fails to properly consider the moral worth of animals. The claims made against veganism by the progressive left are some of the most insincere and disingenuous of all arguments used against veganism. They often involve misrepresentation, tokenisation and appropriation. They often focus on people in disadvantaged situations, not because they’re truly standing up for them, but because those people are a useful shield for why they want to continue eating animal products.

ED WINTERS: Many of you may have already seen the clip… Billie Eilish states that you can’t claim that you love animals if you eat meat… This clip has led to a massive amount of online criticism and pushback, with people calling her privileged. In the days after, Billie then shared footage of what happens to farmed animals, giving those who follow her an opportunity to see for themselves why she made the claim about not being able to love animals and eat them…

an online piece by Vox, which claimed that it was ‘unusual’ that ‘the overwhelming opposition’ to her comments came from those who claim to be part of the progressive left. As someone who has spent time in the US and debated and spoken at liberal campuses there, I don’t think this is unusual at all. In fact, I think this is entirely unsurprising and predictable.

I’ve been called anti-indigenous, classist and racist by people offended that I had set up a debate table with the claim that eating animal products is morally wrong. The sad truth is that the progressive left continues to abysmally fail when it comes to animals…

The claims made against veganism by the progressive left are some of the most insincere and disingenuous of all arguments used against veganism. They often involve misrepresentation, tokenisation and appropriation. They often focus on people in disadvantaged situations, not because they’re truly standing up for them, but because those people are a useful shield for why they themselves aren’t vegan…

Progressives demand that celebrities speak out about issues and use their platforms to raise awareness. However, the celebrity must only speak out about an issue that is on the list of approved topics that the progressive left wants them to talk about. When Billie Eilish complains about billionaires she’s not privileged, she’s using her platform to hold people accountable…

Like the rest of the political spectrum, the left fails to properly consider the moral worth of animals. They too want to diminish the ethical injustice of animal farming because they too want to continue eating animal products… While leftists may take offence on behalf of people who vegans are not referring to, it is far more offensive to appropriate the situations of those people and use them as a shield against criticism of your own behaviour.

The progressive left doesn’t like it when animal exploitation is framed as a moral issue because it exposes hypocrisy in their life that they don’t want to address… Saying that animal suffering, exploitation and slaughter is ‘not a moral’ issue is so disturbing, and refusing to engage with the conversation from a moral perspective is such a convenient way of trying to deny any responsibility for what happens to animals.
